Tesla to spend $6.7M converting former Austin H-E-B to showroom
The showroom could be as large as 64,771 square feet, according to a filing.

Earlier this week, the Austin Business Journal reported Tesla was up to something at a former southwest Austin H-E-B store. Located at 7010 West Highway 71, Austin, TX 78735, and known colloquially as "the Y," where Highway 71 and Route 290 split, it would be another facility for the electric car company that has made its presence felt in Central Texas over the last few years.
The Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation filing is sparse in detail. Under the Scope of Work section, it reads, simply: "Interior buildout for Tesla." The space, categorized as a renovation/alteration, is listed at 64,771 square feet. The estimated project cost is $6,700,000 and construction is slated to begin on December 12, 2023, with a completion date set for November 12, 2024.
A June 9 filing with the City of Austin, first reported by the Austin American-Statesman, provides more insight on what the electric vehicle company plans to do in the disused H-E-B space. Categorized as under expedited review, the description for the project is "Change of Use/Remodel to an existing HEB Store into a new Tesla Automotive Dealership."
The dealership — Tesla calls them showrooms or galleries — is called Tesla Center West Austin, and will take over the H-E-B at Center of the Hills that moved to a new space in 2021.
As of this week, the plumbing, fire, health, and commercial zoning portions of the review have been approved.
When completed, this would be the fourth such Tesla showroom in Central Texas. Because the company owns the manufacturing facilities and the showrooms, Texas law dictates that, despite welcoming Tesla with open arms, customers cannot purchase vehicles directly in the showrooms and that cars made in Texas have to be taken out of state and brought back in before being sold to Texas residents.
