EV sales have doubled. Is a ‘tidal wave’ coming?

Like most complex problems, the answer is a blend of solutions. In an ideal world every house in every climate would be 100% passively heated/cooled. But we know that's not practical, we will always need some form of supplemental heating/cooling in most climates and the goal should be a blend of...

EV sales have doubled. Is a ‘tidal wave’ coming?

He didn't say grid capacity would need to double, he said the electricity generated would need to double if every household added two BEVs. Current electrical generation is a small fraction of total generation capacity (which is a fraction of grid capacity). You are confusing grid capacity with...

EV sales have doubled. Is a ‘tidal wave’ coming?

The theoretical maximum is 35 but you're not going to see anything close to that in the real world. The most efficient systems I'm aware of that are currently available start peaking somewhere above 5 using ground source loops in advantageous situations so the results are dependent upon local...

EV sales have doubled. Is a ‘tidal wave’ coming?

Your analysis exposes the fundemental flaw in your reasoning when you suggest that a 30% increase in electrical consumption requires a grid with 30% more capacity. That's not how grids work because you have to account for the time of use. The current grid is operated on a daily basis of around...

EV sales have doubled. Is a ‘tidal wave’ coming?

While I agree that distributed systems are the best solution, and also the way things are moving, the distributed assets don't necessarily need to be owned at the individual level. In some cases that makes sense, but not in all cases. For example, it makes sense to have roof-top solar (but not...

EV sales have doubled. Is a ‘tidal wave’ coming?

Installing charging solutions is not going to slow the transition to EV's down. It only takes a few weeks lead time to upgrade an electrical system (including turning a 100 amp service into a 200 amp service). But new homes all come with 200 amp service (high-end homes sometimes come with more)...

We can only judge what you mean via the words you write. Are you saying you are using words in a non-conforming manner?

EV sales have doubled. Is a ‘tidal wave’ coming?

I'm well-versed in the energy consumption of homes, cars, grid capacity, etc. Yes, EV's will push up fossil fuels used on the grid. But nothing it can't handle. Even if all EV's ran on electricity sourced 100% from fossil fuels they would still have a lower carbon footprint than if all of them...

EV sales have doubled. Is a ‘tidal wave’ coming?

There might be local shortages here and there and the utility will fix them, just as they have always done when there has been sudden growth in electrical consumption. Fortunately, EV's can charge at night when utilities don't want to turn off their generating assets if they can help it. The...

Environmentalists calling for boycott of Toyota because of its lobbying governments to slow BEV adoption progress

And if you do have a working hydrogen station it's going to cost you the gasoline equivalent of about $6-7/gallon. Considering there is no easy way to lower the cost (especially of renewable green hydrogen) I don't see this taking off in the next couple of decades at a minimum.

Environmentalists calling for boycott of Toyota because of its lobbying governments to slow BEV adoption progress

Yeah, well maybe he should have thought about that back when he was telling us that consumers didn't want EV's, there was no demand for them. Part of getting paid millions to run a major corporation is having enough foresight to guide the company profitably, now, and into the future. He's...

EVs reach 4.8% of monthly sales in the US

Is it your intention to turn this forum into a gun debate? In any case, last time I checked, all my guns were legal and no one has ever tried to take them away from me. So it's utterly baffling why you would insert that here unless you are trying to disrupt the forum.

The behavior you describe is already illegal. And for good reasons.

EVs reach 4.8% of monthly sales in the US

The thing is, switching from gas to electric cars just saves us money and results in cars that need less service, we still have the same functionality, only better. And the total cost is lower. However, cell phones can increase productivity in profound ways. And we have already made it illegal...

Tesla Model S at Nurbergring in car video w/ yoke

I saw 279 kph displayed on the cars speedometer- which is 173 mph. The auxiliary instrumentation read 269 kph which is about 3%-4% slower (it was also slightly faster to react to speed changes). This means we can't expect a big jump under the assumption the car was top speed limited. But I...

    Electric motorcycles

Tossability (the ease at which a bike can "thrown around" on pavement) has more to do with chassis geometry and suspension than weight. Some 500-600 lb. bikes are more tossable than some 300-400 lb. bikes. At 6'-04" and 205 lbs. I don't fit well on most lighter bikes. I wish motorcycle frames...

Sandy's rant. lol. I love this man.

To add to that, I'll bet the plastic insulation on modern EV's high voltage wiring is in an entirely different class of durability compared to what your dad's old golf cart used.

Sandy's rant. lol. I love this man.

Ev's catch fire at the rate of about 9% that of ICE vehicles (per mile travelled). I don't think there is a big difference between the miles an EV travels and that of ICE so the figure should be roughly the same for number of registered vehicles.

No, you just don't understand why it's wrong for a journalist to cherry-pick.

Tesla files to become an electricity provider in Texas

I learned at an early age to not offer my opinion on things I know nothing about. It has served me well. I don't have an aversion to Lora Kolodny, it's her reporting I am critiquing - it doesn't meet professional standards. I thought I made that easily understandable and crystal clear.
